Led by CENSIS Business Development Managers, Stephen Milne and Jim Cockram, this coffee break will look at the heating homes and buildings to create energy efficient spaces. How can sensing, imaging and IoT help individuals and businesses make homes and workplaces warmer and greener?
The Scottish Government’s recent consultation document noted that heating homes and workplaces accounts for over 20% of Scotland’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing these will be one of the most important things in helping meet Scotland’s ambitious 2045 net zero targets.
The Internet of Things is already beginning to affect the way we consume and optimise our energy usage at home, e.g., through the use of smart thermostats and or smart meters that show us how much gas or electricity we are using. But how could IoT on a much larger scale help to leverage new opportunities such as low carbon or zero emissions heating systems?
There are many way IoT could be used to deliver benefits to utility companies, building owners, home owners, landlords and tenants by making buildings smarter and more environmentally efficient. Our discussion could touch on:
- Retrofitting IoT to monitor existing spaces. Many older properties are workplaces are inefficient and difficult to heat. How do we identify low-cost, easy to fit IoT to support energy savings?
- How can IoT be used to tackle social inequality in housing by helping to end fuel poverty?
- New build homes and workplaces. Can we use IoT in the construction process so that buildings use just the right amount of energy?
- How can sensing, imaging or IoT be used to support efforts to reduce demand for fossil fuel energy? Could they support replacing them with low carbon or zero emissions systems such as district heating or ground sourced heat pumps; widely used in other countries but relatively unfamiliar in Scotland.
- Could hydrogen be a solution to net-zero home heating?
